Dr Overbeck took his medical doctorate at the University of Lausanne in 1983. Then he worked at a number of hospitals in Switzerland and South Africa for continuing his education.
Specializing in internal medicine, infections, and tropical disease in 1989, of which he was granted a certificate by the Swiss Board of Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease, he also became involved in a research project in the field of HIV. In addition, he held functions as Senior Registrar and consultant at the university hospitals in Berne, and subsequently, in Lausanne. In 1990 he was awarded the title of Master of Science by London University.
Since 1997 he has been Chief Medical Officer at Swiss Re Life & Health, as a member of senior management. Also, he is a member of the Royal Society of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, and has a teaching appointment for internal medicine at the University Hospital of Zurich. He has been a fellow at the Collegium Helveticum in Zurich since October 2004. At 1997 he established a scientific board forum at Zurich Technological Institute, in order to strengthen the collaboration and connection between diferent fields of research: Humanities, Biology and Natural Science.
